Guwahati, Feb 22: A former All Assam Students Union leader who later headed the Bongaigaon unit of the Congress in Lower Assam, Shankar Prasad Rai, has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, giving a blow to the grand old party.
Shankar Prasad joined BJP in the party headquarters on Thursday in the presence of Assam BJP State President, Bhabesh Kalita.
Shankar Prasad Rai was a former state president of AASU and had taken up the leadership of the Congress in Bongaigaon, a prestigious gas refinery region adjoining Goalpara district and West Bengal.
He resigned from the Congress on February 20, citing “personal reasonsā€¯.
