GUWAHATI:
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced Bhuban Gam as its candidate for the upcoming Majuli bye-poll, on February 14.
Announcing the name of Gam for the coming election, BJP general secretary Arun Singh said, “The central election committee of the party has chosen Gam as its candidate for the 99 Majuli (ST) seats,” said Singh.
Gam, who represents the Mising community, had earlier sought a BJP ticket in the 2016 and 2021 state elections but was denied.
The Majuli seat was vacated last year by former chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal after he was elected to Rajya Sabha. Later, he was included in the union cabinet.
Meanwhile, the Congress has left the Majuli seat for its ally Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP).
By-poll to fill the Majuli seat will be held on March 7 and the counting of votes will take place on March 10, alongside counting for Uttar Pradesh,
Uttarakhand, Goa, Punjab and Manipur assembly elections.
