Garbage at Ganol dam not to affect drinking water

The deputy commissioner has informed that this huge waste accumulation has taken place due to dumping of garbage in the upper stretches of the stream and fines have been imposed against the Rongram market committee.

TURA:

Following the torrential rain on Thursday that led to the sudden accumulation of tonnes of garbage getting lodged by the dam site of the Ganol river which supplies drinking water to Tura, authorities have allayed fears assuring that drinking water supplied to the town will not be impacted by the garbage which is currently under a clean-up operation.

“Some concerns have been shown towards the utilisation of this water downstream for Tura town by PHE, I would like to alleviate those concerns that there are trash traps in the Ganol site itself which captures and does not allow any garbage to be flown out of the dam site. The water that is released downstream is filtered and then treated as well before PHE supplies it to Tura town,” clarified Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani.

A full-scale clean-up operation of the dam site has begun on a war footing on Friday with teams totalling 65 men representing the State Disaster Rescue Force, Tura Municipal Board, Rongram Block and the Ganol Hydel Project working round the clock to bring ashore garbage that comprises of plastic waste, bottles, bamboo and timber among other items lodged in the water.

The deputy commissioner has informed that this huge waste accumulation has taken place due to dumping of garbage in the upper stretches of the stream and fines have been imposed against the Rongram market committee.

The garbage being collected is to be shifted to the Tura garbage dump site at Rongkhon Songgital area.

The operation to clear the dam of all pollutants and residue is expected to last a full 72 hours.
