GHADC CEM election likely to be held on Saturday

TURA:

The Opposition Trinamool Congress in the GHADC has decided to field rebel NPP MDC, Dhormonath Ch Sangma, who defected to their side along with defeated CEM Benedic R Marak who was ousted by the ruling NPP alliance in February.

Dhormonath will take on NPP MDC Albinush R Marak of Siju constituency when the election for CEM takes place.

A two time MDC from Naguapara (Tikrikilla), Dhormonath Sangma had won the election on an NPP ticket in 2021.

“Our candidate for the CEM election will be Dhormonath Sangma,” confirmed Williamnagar MDC Alphonsus R Marak while speaking to The Meghalayan.

When the new Executive Committee led by the NPP was formed as an alliance, last year, Dhormonath was appointed Executive Member in charge of Haats, a crucial position of all village markets in the entire five districts of Garo Hills.

In his earlier tenure as a first time MDC he was Executive Member in charge of Rural Development and Water Works.

Last year, after formation of the new EC, an altercation took place between Dhormonath and Tura BJP MDC Bernard Marak over official work leading to physical manhandling of Dhormonath who later filed a police complaint over the assault.

Meanwhile, the election expected to take place on March 5, a day after the Chairman’s election.

The district council is in a precarious situation as it has been without a CEM for five long days, since resignation of CEM Rakesh A Sangma on March 27 night.

As per the rules of the district council, a new CEM is supposed to be in place within 48 hours of the resignation of the last council head.
