Heroin worth Rs 14 crore seized from Assam-Nagaland border; two held

The two arrested persons have been identified as Lanahmai Stephen Thingao (28) and Veipuh Prou (25) from Manipur.

GUWAHATI:

The Assam Police seized 1.995 kg of suspected heroin worth Rs 14 crore in the international market from Dillai Gate in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district bordering Nagaland, on May 8. The police have arrested two person in connection with the seizure.

An official statement issued by the police on May 9, said, “Acting on a tip-off, the police set up a naka (check post) at 12 Mile under Dillai Police Station and intercepted a metallic pearl black sedan without a number plate. While searching the vehicle, our team recovered 152 soapboxes containing approximately 1.995 kg heroin.”

The two arrested persons have been identified as Lanahmai Stephen Thingao (28) and Veipuh Prou (25) from Manipur.

“The naka was set up by inspector Mwblik Brahma, officer-in-charge of Bokajan Police Stationand his team. The seizure was done under the physical supervision of Nahid Karishma, deputy superintendent of police, Karbi Anglong,” the statement added.

Reacting to the news of the seizure, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to a popular micro-blogging website and wrote, “In a big and smart op, @Assam Police intercepted a car at 12 Mile under Dillai PS and recovered 152 soapboxes containing 1.995 kg suspected heroin. Two persons of two neighbouring states were apprehended. Further investigation is on (sic).”
