Shillong:

The Hill Farmers’ Union (HFU) Pynursla block has expressed concern at the falling prices of important agricultural produce such as broomsticks and wild pepper (soh marit khlaw).

Speaking to reporters after meeting Agriculture Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, president of HFU Block Vishal Khongshei said, “The prices of broomstick fell from Rs 130 per quintal to Rs 70 per quintal, and even long pepper, which is usually sold at Rs 600, is now Rs 400. We are yet to find out the reason why the prices are falling.”

He also informed the minister about the decline in citrus production.

Khongshei has urged the minister to also open up the border markets, which will benefit the farmers.

He informed me that on July 10, a meeting of all farmers has been scheduled to discuss the issues faced by them.
