JOWAI:

The National Highway 06 in Sunapur, East Jaintia Hills district – popularly known as Narpuh landslide-prone area has been disrupted since June 14 night due to a landslide triggered by heavy rain.

The main affected area was at the Sunapur Tunnel, just after Lukha River.

The same area was affected by a mudslide that struck the tunnel on June 14 morning and it was not until around 2 pm that the area was cleared for traffic movement.

However, just hours after the road was cleared, it was once hit by a landslide in the late evening.

The landslide has badly affected commuters travelling to and from Barak Valley, Silchar, Mizoram, Tripura and also Manipur.

Efforts to clear the debris by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is under way.

Meanwhile, the state police is in constant touch with the district administration to provide assistance to the stranded truckers in NH 06.

“Police team from Umkiang Patrol Post and Lumshnong Police Station distributed food and water bottles to the truck & other drivers while thanking them for their patience in this unforeseen circumstance,” East Jaintia Hills SP said on June 15.
