Dhaka, Feb 18: Meghalaya Government plans to move Bangladesh for putting up a statue of the freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem, the King of Hima Nongkhlaw, at the jail in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Deputy CM Snaiwbhalang Dhar told a group of visiting journalist at Dhaka that state government with pursue the matter with Bangladesh government.
Minister Paul Lyngdoh accompanied Dy CM during the visit to Dhaka jail on Saturday.
“The Government of Meghalaya will prioritize communication with the Bangladesh Government to obtain approval for the erection of the statue of U Tirot Sing Syiem in Dhaka,” informed Deputy CM Dhar.
During their visit, the Meghalaya government delegation found that the government of Bangladesh has no written records regarding the days spent in jail by U Tirot Sing.
“As of now, the Bangladesh government has no records of U Tirot Sing Syiem, despite his incarceration from 1833 to 1835. No memorial of him exists in the jail,” the Deputy CM added.
The Deputy CM, along with the Minister in charge of Arts and Culture, confirmed that the State government would provide records to the Bangladesh Government to ensure that the days spent by the Khasi Warrior King in jail are remembered in history.
It is worth mentioning that on Friday, the Government of Meghalaya unveiled the bust of U Tirot Sing Syiem at the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
