Meghalaya Guv flags in Indian Army’s motorcycle expedition at Umroi

The expedition completed the journey through Meghalaya embracing the natural beauty of the state and also spreading the message of glorious 75 years of freedom.

GUWAHATI:

Governor Satya Pal Malik, on August 10, flagged in Indian Army’s Freedom Ride-Trans Meghalaya Monsoon Odyssey in a grand ceremony at Umroi Military Station.

The expedition, which was launched by the Indian Army on the occasion of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, covered all districts of Meghalaya, with 25 Indian Army riders travelling 1100 km in eight days from August 3 to 10. It had been flagged off by Gajraj Corps (IV Corps) GOC Lt Gen DS Rana in Tezpur base headquarters on August 3.

A large number of dignitaries from civil administration and military including General Officer Commanding of Red Horns Division and Ri Bhoi deputy commissioner Arpit Upadhyay attended the event at Umroi Military Station on Wednesday.

The expedition team visited the memorials of three famous freedom fighters of the state namely U Kiang Nongbah, Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma and U Tirot Sing Syiem, who sacrificed their lives in the struggle against the British, and paid homage to them on behalf of the Indian Army.

The Freedom Ride got a grand reception in all the districts in presence of officials from civil administration, the tourism department and Meghalaya Police. The riders had meaningful interaction with school students, NCC cadets, police officials, and local administration and a series of public interface events was done with a spirited feel of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.

The rally also aimed to motivate the youth of Meghalaya to join the Indian Army as Agniveers and tread on the righteous and honorous Agnipath. The ride interacted with numerous students and gave them insight on the scheme which was informative as well as inspirational. The Indian Army has been organising various events reaching out to the local populace across the country to commemorate Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
