Shillong:

The Vice-Chancellor of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Prof P S Shukla has appealed to the Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association (MCTA) to engage in constructive dialogue to resolve the ongoing stalemate between the association and him.

In a press statement issued here by NEHU, Shukla addressed the ongoing matter involving the MCTA and their stance of non-cooperation and appealed the MCTA to reconsider their approach in the interest of the students’ community spread across the entire Northeastern region.

Shukla expressed his willingness to engage in constructive dialogue to resolve any concerns and invites the MCTA for an open discussion to achieve an amicable resolution.

He emphasised that the adoption of the FYUP Scheme is a significant stride towards holistic education and is confident that this transformative step will pave the way for a brighter and more enriching academic journey for the students.

Meanwhile, the MCTA held a press conference in the late afternoon on Monday where they demanded the withdrawal of the July 12 notification issued by NEHU.

Asked on their next move, the president of MCTA, B H Biam, said, “We will have to meet as a body. We will have a collective decision which will be after threadbare discussion.”

General secretary A W Rani said that the association has demanded that the university withdraw the notification with immediate effect.

He added that the VC’s silence prompted the MCTA to start the non-cooperation movement adding that it is still on.

He said, “We are boycotting all the first semester classes. I mean, we’re not taking any classes under the NEP.”

He added that undertaking any assignment such as setting of question papers, moderation and so on and so forth related to the first semester courses.

A member of the MCTA Amanda Basaiawmoit questioned the silence of the state government and NEHU.

Biam reiterated that the MCTA is not against NEP 2020 but it is opposing the alleged hurried, high-handedness and abuse of power and authority by the VC.
