NONGSTOIN:

The Nongstoin-Maweit road, which has remained dilapidated for more than five decades, now sees a ray of hope after the MDA government sanctioned funds for upgradation/improvement of at least 23 kms.

Mawshynrut MLA Gigur Myrthong informed that though the funds could not be obtained for the 35-km length as expected but the work for the improvement of the road from 0.00 km to 23 km will benefit the villagers of Maweit area.

He added that the work will be implemented under the Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project (MITP) funded by the World Bank at an amount of over 98 crores.

It may be mentioned that the Nongstoin-Maweit road was first carved out by the Assam government in the 1964-65.

The pathetic condition of the road came to the limelight after the people of the area including the village headmen, NGOs and the public raised concerns and protested against the government for doing nothing to improve the road which was constructed by the Assam government.
