Online database of Assam Agitation victims soon: CM Himanta

The Assam Agitation was led by the All Assam Students Union and Sadou Asom Gana Sangram Parishad (SAGSP) from 1979 to 1985 for the detection and deportation of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants from the state.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on December 3, directed the Assam Accord Implementation Department to make an online database of those who were hit by bullets or were seriously injured during their participation in the Assam Agitation.

Chairing the meeting on Assam Agitation Welfare Trust at Janata Bhawan, Sarma discussed the matters related to future tasks as well as measures required for strengthening the trust.

“Directed the Implementation of Assam Accord Department to make arrangements for maintaining an online database of all martyrs, firing victims and other seriously injured persons in the Assam Agitation,” Sarma said in a tweet after the meeting.

“Discussed a plan of action to strengthen Assam Agitation Welfare Trust. Constituted with a fund of Rs 5 crore, the Trust will get additional Rs 5 crore from our government. The whole amount will be used to assist families of martyrs & victims of Assam Agitation through government welfare schemes,” Sarma tweeted.

The Assam Agitation was led by the All Assam Students Union and Sadou Asom Gana Sangram Parishad (SAGSP) from 1979 to 1985 for the detection and deportation of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants from the state.

A total of 288 persons, including 57 women were seriously injured during Assam Agitation.

The Chief Minister announced that an additional amount of Rs 5 crore would be provided to the trust.

The Assam Agitation Welfare Trust was formed with an initial corpus of Rs 5 crore. With the addition of another Rs 5 crore, as per the Chief Minister’s directive, it would have a total of Rs 10 crore at its disposal. This amount would be utilised to provide various relief measures to family members of martyrs of the Assam Agitation and those grievously injured in it.

Minister of Assam Accord Implementation Atul Bora, Finance Minister Ajanta Neog, Chief Secretary Paban Kumar Borthakur, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Samir Kumar Sinha, All Assam Students Union (AASU) chief advisor, Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharjee, AASU president, Dipanka Nath, along with Chandrakanta Talukdar in his capacity as representative of the Assam Agitation affected families took part in the meeting.
