Despite the Union Agriculture Ministry restricting the use of Glyphosate, a widely used herbicide, which is known to contaminate the soil and destroy its nutrients with a possible risk of cancer by human ingestion through the crops, unscrupulous traders are openly selling these highly toxic substances not just in rural markets of Garo Hills but even in the heart of Tura.
In a snub to authorities, street vendors openly sell this highly toxic substance on the main footpath at Tura bazar, near Sundare Complex, and right under the nose of district authorities, unchallenged and unchecked.
Garo Hills has been blessed with a rich soil that allows farmers to grow different varieties of fruits and crops, but some farmers are taking the short and easy way out by using these pesticides and herbicides to clear their grounds for sowing crops and in the process contaminating the soil for generations to come.
