Six held for assaulting doctor over alleged medical negligence in Tripura

The arrested people have been identified as Harinath Tripura (18), Biswa Mohan Tripura (65), Nripendra Tripura (50), Chitta Kumar Tripura (37), Jyotida Tripura (35), and Jabrai Tripura (50).

The Tripura Police arrested six people in connection with the assault on an on-duty medical officer over alleged medical negligence, on May 6.

The arrested people have been identified as Harinath Tripura (18), Biswa Mohan Tripura (65), Nripendra Tripura (50), Chitta Kumar Tripura (37), Jyotida Tripura (35), and Jabrai Tripura (50), the police said.

Talking to the press, a police officer, on the condition of anonymity, said that based on a tip-off a police force led by an additional superintendent of police Binay Kishore Debbarma carried out a raid in and around the Manikpur area under the Dhalai district and apprehended six persons from their residents.

“We have shifted them to Chailengta police station in Dhalai district anticipating the law and order issue and have forwarded them to Longtharai valley subdivision court,” the police officer said.

A case under IPC sections 148, 149, 153, 333, 326, 307, 427, 34, and (A) and (B) of the Tripura Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence & Damage to Property) Act, 2013 has been registered against the six.

Earlier on May 4, an on-duty medical officer was thrashed by an irate mob after two children reportedly died due to alleged medical negligence at Manikpur Primary Health Centre in Dhalai district of Tripura. The on-duty doctor, Pranab Debbarma, had sustained grievous injuries and was later shifted to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala. Following the incident, the All Tripura Government Doctors Association (ATGDA) had demanded strict action against the perpetrators on May 5.

Speaking with The Meghalayan, the legislator of the area Sambhu Lal Chakma said, “On behalf of the peace-loving people, I salute the police administration for its speedy success. No one will be spared for inciting violence and disturbing the law and order situation in the state.”
