State fighters bring home national honours

With this victory Kharshandy along with Echwamida O Phawa have qualified to represent India at the GAMMA Asian Championship.

SHILLONG:

Darren Kharshandy, representing Meghalaya, emerged as champion in the 57-61 kg weight category in the Annual India Nationals held by the Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts India (GAMMAI) at the Mahaveer Institute in Hyderabad.

With this victory Kharshandy along with Echwamida O Phawa have qualified to represent India at the GAMMA Asian Championship.

Earlier, Phawa won gold, in the straw weight category (48 – 52kg) on Sunday, after defeating four opponents. Similarly Kharshandy had to defeat four opponents before clinching the honours.

The two went on to thank their sponsors and well-wishers. In a joint statement Phawa and Kharshandy said, “We would like to express our gratitude and dedicate this victory to all our sponsors and well-wishers who had supported us in our journey to the national championship.” Both fighters have been training at HappyredroosterMMA in Laitumkhrah since 2018.
