Thunderstorm affects 47 villages in four blocks

In Rongram block, 12 villages were impacted leading to 22 houses being destroyed, while in Dadenggre 35 houses were damaged. In Selsella block, 6 houses experienced damage, including two school buildings that had their tin roofs blown off by the strong winds.

The thunderstorm on Monday night in West Garo Hills, which affected up to 47 villages spread across four development blocks, was accompanied by strong gusts that toppled trees, including numerous areca nut plants, and blew away roofing.

According to district officials, the Dalu block near the international border with Bangladesh was affected the most, as at least 162 houses spread across 24 villages witnessed total or partial destruction of houses.

In Rongram block, 12 villages were impacted leading to 22 houses being destroyed, while in Dadenggre 35 houses were damaged. In Selsella block, 6 houses experienced damage, including two school buildings that had their tin roofs blown off by the strong winds.

Another night of thunderstorms on Tuesday led to damages in the West Khasi Hills region bordering Assam’s Kamrup district.

Thatched dwelling homes in Athiabari and Aradonga Garo villages have reported sizable damages from Tuesday night’s storm.

The homes of Mrs. Anomaia Sangma in Athiabari and Mrs. Grebula R Marak in Aradonga villages were completely destroyed.

In response to the calamity, members of a local welfare organization A’chik Youth Welfare Organization from Aradonga, on Wednesday, visited the two affected families and handed over food items and some money to help them tide over their difficulties.
