Traders’ association rejects KHADC's notification

Shillong:

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Khasi Jaintia of Fresh Vegetable and Ginger Trader Association has rejected the notification of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to disallow the deduction of weights for agricultural produce.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, chairman of the JAC Bris Mawthoh said that the JAC members will continue to deduct weights and will wait for the KHADC to call them for talks.

He said, “The KHADC did not call the trade associations, just a few were called. On our part, we formed the JAC on May 29 and we have unanimously rejected the notification as long as no decision is reached among the traders and the farmers.”

The JAC consists of Khasi Jaintia Fresh Vegetable Suppliers Association, Shiliang Um Traders Association, Iewduh Khasi Pnar Association, and Fresh Ginger Ri Bhoi district.

Mawthoh said that such a notification will work only in Khasi Hills and not in Jaintia Hills. He said, “We purchased vegetables and ginger from Jaintia Hills as well. We have to deduct weights in Jaintia Hills but we could not in Khasi Hills.”

It may be mentioned that the KHADC recently decided to put an end to the deduction of weights for agricultural produce in Iewduh.

The council is also monitoring the operation of local markets falling under its jurisdiction, particularly with the deduction of weights of agricultural produce in the local markets as this affects the income of the local farmers of the state.
