Transparency needed in medical treatment: Mukul

SHILLONG:

Trinamool Congress MLA and Leader of Opposition, Mukul Sangma expressed concern that medical expenses are becoming very high.

He was speaking during a cut motion discussion moved by Trinamool Congress MLA, George Lyngdoh during the last day of budget session on Thursday.

Sangma said that there has to be complete transparency in the cost of treatment for every treatment which is under MHIS and additional cost which is not covered by the health insurance can be then known to the patient party.

Stating that there are too many road accidents, Sangma said, “While we need to give prompt treatment for these victims of road accidents, there is a need to activate the committees for road safety. It is a responsibility of the authorities; the Minister of Transport is the chairman of the state level road safety committee.”

Further said, “We cannot deny admission of a road accident.”

On the other hand, Sangma also sought query on the Shillong Medical College as to what should be done about it and in respect of Tura Medical College, Sangma pointed out that too much funds have been released.

Turning to the reply from the unstarred questions, he said Rs 172 crore is the amount of fund received from the government of India till date with regard to Tura Medical College.

Meanwhile, Lyngdoh sought a query from the health minister on the status of the AYUSH directorate.

Another Trinamool Congress MLA Himalaya Shangpliang urged the government to give priority as far as infrastructure is concerned and said there is a need for more rooms in PHCs and CHCs.
