NONGPOH:

The Umiam Youth Week 2024 reached its grand finale on January 27, 2024, as the Office of Dorbar Shnong Umiam hosted a spectacular Closing Ceremony.

The event was graced by the presence of Chief Executive Member Pyniaid Sing Syiem of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, who attended as the Chief Guest. Rangkynsai Kharbuki MDC Umroi Constituency and members of the Executive Committee Dorbar Shnong Umiam, along with other prominent personalities, also marked their presence.

Syiem commended the Dorbar Shnong Umiam for spearheading such programs that foster unity among the youth within the village. During his address, he highlighted the significance of the Elaka Act of 1991, empowering Dorbar Shnong to administer and oversee Village Level Administration. Umiam, with its Sannat, an authority bestowed by the Hima Mylliem, attained the status of a full-fledged village in 1987.

Expressing concern about the intrusion of negative elements into society, Syiem noted the alarming rise in cases, particularly involving drugs. He drew parallels between the challenges posed by drug use and the impact of the COVID pandemic, emphasizing the need for collective action.

Syiem earnestly urged the youth to distance themselves from drugs and collaborate with the government to eradicate this societal menace. Addressing the gravity of the situation, he emphasized the pivotal role of the youth in bringing about positive change.

Syiem stressed the importance of collaborative efforts among various groups, including women and youth groups within villages, as a crucial step in curbing detrimental elements affecting societal peace.

An elder of the village, Bub Mawlong, took the audience on a nostalgic journey, recounting how Dorbar Shnong Umiam gained recognition in 1987 after separating from Nongsder Village.

The closing ceremony was not only a time of reflection and acknowledgment but also a momentous occasion for village elders above 60 years old, who were honored during the event. Awards were also presented to the winners of the Youth Week 2024.

Adding a vibrant crescendo to the ceremony, renowned musicians from Meghalaya, including Kyntiewlin Mawphniang, Snow White, Banker Kharkongor, Wanbha, DJ Daring, and others, took the stage, creating a lively and memorable atmosphere to mark the conclusion of the Umiam Youth Week 2024.
