Uniform civil code threat to India’s unity: TMC

Marak said that the existence of differences between culturally diverse people does not imply discrimination, but rather indicates a robust democracy.

SHILLONG:

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Tuesday said that the uniform civil code (UCC) posed a serious threat to unity in diversity, multiculturalism and secularism.

TMC youth leader Richard Marak said that there should be clear understanding regarding values of any personal law and it should be respected to its maximum spirit.

“Uniform civil code will destroy India. India needs unity not uniformity,” Marak said.

According to the TMC leader India is known to the world for its unity in diversity and the country has always been diverse.

Marak said that the existence of differences between culturally diverse people does not imply discrimination, but rather indicates a robust democracy.

“Instead of legal provisions founded on uniformity, most countries are moving towards recognising differences,” he said.

He said that uniformity can be unfair to weaker and vulnerable sections.

He said that it’s important to celebrate diversity without discouraging specific groups.

“We should prioritise practical solutions to the problems we face, if there are any, rather than merely relying on symbolic or decorative measures. A uniform civil code will not unite but will divide India and bring chaos,” Marak said.
