Visually impaired lament people’s insensitivity towards them

Jitendra Dkhar, president of the Blind Leads Trust, said that there are some people who do not care about them.

SHILLONG:

The visually impaired have raised concerns over insensitivity of the society towards their plight.

Jitendra Dkhar, president of the Blind Leads Trust, said that there are some people who do not care about them.

Dkhar said that while walking on the street, going to the market or travelling by public transport there are some insensitive persons who don’t even mind lying.

He also said that even while walking on the road people will curse and blame them for obstructing them.

The president of the Blind Lead Trust also said that it is difficult for them to walk on the footpaths since they are unevenly constructed.

On the use of technology for their day-to-day affair he said that the visually impaired of the state are lagging behind in this regard since there are no training centres who would teach them free of cost on how to use a computer or an android phone.

Dkhar said that the Blind Lead Trust is in the process of setting up such a training centre on how to use a screen reader for computers or an android phone.

“This will be an opportunity for those who come from poor families to uplift their education and also give them job openings,” he said.

Earlier on Saturday, the Blind Lead Trust which looks after the welfare of the visually impaired with vision aid distributed smartphones to them at Nongthymmai Indoor Sports Hall. These smart phones have been specially designed for the visually impaired.

The Rangbah Shnong of Lawjynriew S B Kharshandi was the chief guest on the occasion.
