150 extra beds under new project for Baghmara Civil Hospital

Baghmara, March 4: Baghmara civil hospital in South Garo Hills, the only major government run health centre in the district which has been functioning beyond its capacity for the past many years, is soon to get a major upgrade with additional 150 beds, announced Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.

The chief minister made this announcement in Baghmara while inaugurating the new academic block and hostels for girls and boys at the Captain Williamson Memorial Government college on Monday.

Recognising the need for expanding health infrastructure and facilities in Baghmara where patients from as distant as Maheskola, Mahadeo, Rongara and Siju come for medical intervention, Conrad Sangma said that his government has proposed 150 additional beds under a new project.

“We have already handed over a proposal to the DONER ministry for a sum of Rs 15 crores for the upgradation of Baghmara civil hospital that will have 150 additional beds,” said the chief minister.

Adding to the proposal, the chief minister also informed that an additional sum of Rs 5 Crore is being earmarked from the state budget that will take care of the construction of quarters to house doctors, nurses and other medical staff at the hospital.

Expressing a likely delay in the announcement of the project by the DONER ministry in view of the impending general elections in the country, the chief minister was optimistic that the project could begin as early as 2025.
