20 students fall ill after taking medicine

SHILLONG:

Around 20 children from a school in Laitlyngkot village, East Khasi Hills district fell ill on Friday after taking the iron and folic acid medicine.

The children of Class VI to Class VIII were from Kyntiew Shaphrang Higher Secondary School, Laitlyngkot.

One of the teachers of the school, Ïada Kharpomtiah informed that around 72 students had taken the medicine out of whom 21 started vomiting, complaining of stomach ache and some collapsed after having their lunch.

Kharpomtiah said that the medicine comes under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) project.

The school’s principal L Shabong informed that as soon as he came to know about the incident, the students were taken to Laitlyngkot Primary Health Centre situated near the school.

Dr L Jaba in-charge of Laitlyngkot PHC informed that he took a sample of the medicine which comes under the Weekly Iron Folic Acid Supplementation (WIFS) and a report will be sent to Directorate of Health Services for detailed investigation.
