NONGPOH:
The 3rd edition of Berchem Cup Basketball was inaugurated by the Seng Samla, Nongpoh proper at Nomiwell Memorial Secondary School Playground on April 15.
The opening event was attended by M. Tongper Addl. Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi District, Paiem Wanphrang Syiem, Sordar Hima Khad, Ar Lyngdoh, the Seng Kynthei Nongpoh Pyllun, and others.
A total of nine teams in boys category and six teams in girls category from across the Khasi, Jaintia and Ri Bhoi districts will take part in the tournament.
Speaking on the occasion, president of the Seng Samla Nongpoh Proper Lumlang Shylal, said, “We will organise this tournament every year to encourage sportsmanship among the youths, especially those interested in Basketball. The aim of this tournament is to identify talents for bigger tournaments.”
Likewise, Tongper said, “Every sportsperson is an ambassador of peace. In the past, there was war, but after the Olympic games and the Asian games there was no war.”
Tongper also wished the teams to perform well.
The first match was played between Nongpoh Proper and Dubakh, and after a very closely fought battle, Nongpoh Proper won by 68 points against Dubakh 65 points.
