52.80 percent voters’ turnout recorded in GMC polls

GUWAHATI:

Nearly 52.80 per cent voters’ turnout was recorded in Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) polls conducted for 57 wards across 757 polling stations on Friday.

Of the total 60 wards, three candidates have been declared elected unopposed.

A total of 197 candidates contested the poll. Of them, 50 BJP, 54 Congress, 7 AGP, 38 AAP, 25 AJP, 4 CPI(M) and 19 other candidates.

The voting which began at 7.30 am and concluded at 4.30 pm was peaceful, and no untoward incidents were reported from any of the wards.

According to the Assam State Election Commission (ASEC), no request for re-poll has been received so far.

It was also informed that for the first time, EVMs were used in the GMC election.

The counting of votes will be held on April 24 at Maniram Dewan Trade Centre and the result will be declared on the same day.
