SHILLONG:
Former MLA from Phulbari (West Garo Hills) Abu Taher Mondal tendered his resignation from the primary and active membership of the Congress on November 29.
In a letter addressed to the president of Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), Mondal who is also the former Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, said that he has resigned from the primary and active membership of the party and other posts held by him with immediate effect.
Speaking to reporters, Mondal said that he has not decided as to which party he will join but he will decide in the month of December.
He added that he is preparing for the 2023 Assembly elections.
However, sources told The Meghalayan that Mondal will likely join the National People’s Party (NPP) as the sitting MLA of Phulbari, SG Esmatur Mominin, won’t be getting an NPP ticket.
Speculations are rife that Mominin will join the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC).
It may be recalled that state president of the NPP, WR Kharlukhi, had recently said that three sitting NPP MLAs will not be getting party tickets.
In the race to the Assembly elections 2023 which is three-four months away, politicians can be seen defecting from one party to another.
It was on November 28, that two NPP sitting MLAs, Benedic R Marak and Ferlin CA Sangma, and AITC MLA, HM Shangpliang, announced they were joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
