AGARTALA:

Little did 35-five-year-old Rajkumar Bauri, a resident of Mohanpur sub-division in Tripura’s West District, know that his one-day drinking shenanigan will land him in Bangladesh jail for four years.

And on May 29, when he was finally deported to Tripura through the Belonia Land Custom Station in Tripura’s South district, he was at a loss of words.

“Today, they handed over me to Indian officials through Belonia check post. I feel elated and now, can finally breathe freedom after four-long years. I will go straight home; I can’t wait to reunite with my family – my wife and son,” said an emotional, Bauri.

Narrating his ordeal, he said that on one fateful day, four years ago, he, in an inebriated state, had crossed the international border from Sabroom area of Tripura’s South district.

“That day I was intoxicated and went out of home to visit a place in Tripura. I remember sitting on a bus and reaching Sabroom. However, I don’t know why or how I crossed the border. After the crossed over, I had met a man. He had asked me where I am from. I begged him to help me reach home. He took me with him, fetched me food and later, handed me over to the police officials of the Ramgarh police station in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh police, after two hours of interrogation, produced me before the Khagracharri court and it sent me to Feni Jail,” said Bauri.

A Tripura police official, confirming the deportation, said that today Bangladesh police along with the Border Guard of Bangladesh deported Bauri on Sunday.

“Four years back, he had crossed the border in an inebriated condition. In Bangladesh, he was put behind the bar and today, the Bangladesh officials deported him. We have also informed his family members,” the police official said.
