AHRC asks Barak Valley commissioner to probe Silchar firing case; submit report within a month

GUWAHATI:

Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC), on March 10, asked the commissioner of Barak Valley Division to probe the incident of police firing on one Taz Uddin Choudhury in the month of February this year, and submit a report on the incident.

In its order, the AHRC asked commissioner to submit a report in this regard within one month.

The AHRC’s order was based on a complaint filed by one Md Hussain Laskar Silchar through the leader of opposition in the Assam Legislative assembly, Debabrata Saikia, on February 7.

In his complaint, the petitioner had alleged that the police personnel of Silchar police station tortured Choudhury when he was in custody. “After his arrest, Choudhury was detained at Silchar police station for more than 24 hours and tortured under false charges,” the petition alleged.

The petition also mentioned that police had refused to provide arrest memo to the family members Choudhury, and that he was also not produced before the court of the judicial magistrate as per law

According to police, Choudhury, who was arrested from his house at Dahnehari around 2.30 am on February 2, was shot at while trying to escape from police custody on the night of February 3.
