SHILLONG:

The opposition All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), on January 24, assured to constitute an expert committee to study and resolve the demand for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state.

“An expert committee will be set up to assess the current situation with due consultation with all stakeholders and organisations regarding the introduction of ILP, and decide the way forward which is in the best interests of the residents,” said the election manifesto released by AITC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee here.

When asked, Banerjee said, “We will take all the stakeholders, their feedback and suggestions into consideration. We will have a consultation with each and every resident of the state, everyone and then come to a conclusion and do what is in the best interest of the people of the state.”

On December 19, 2019, the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly had passed an official resolution urging the Centre for immediate implementation of the ILP in the state.

The official resolution was also supported by the opposition bench. However, the matter is still lying pending with the Centre.
