Alluring Deathtraps

By the editor

Shillong city and its suburbs have become attractive and lucrative destinations for drug dealers and peddlers who carry on their trade nonchalantly. Recently, even rural areas have been penetrated by these dubious characters. In spite of the frequent police interventions, this evil activity continues unabatedly. Substantial number of young people, irrespective of gender, have been enticed by the deadly poison which ultimately leads to their downfall. In the earlier stages, the affluent countries were affected by this contagion but soon the third world countries too became victims. Hence, the situation has become pandemic and uncontrollable. Meghalaya too is no exception and the trend is a matter of great concern. If they do not stop the evil practice, the road ahead will lead to their doom. Widespread abuse and misuse of drugs affect not only the health of the individuals but also the families, the neighbours, the society and the nation at large.

None can ignore the deadly menace which has become a social problem worldwide and which seems to escalate further in the days to come. Drug consumption is no longer confined to the rich but also to other strata of the population including the poor. The case of drug abuse is increasing at an alarming rate and so none can afford to take it lightly. It is futile to say that the solution to the problem is the sole duty and responsibility of the government; everybody has a responsibility too. How long can we remain indifferent and complacent at what is happening in our own neighbourhood? Can we be mere spectators when we see not only our own children but also those of others around us who resort to drugs to ease their worries, tensions and depression? The time to act is now and procrastination may further damage the well-being of the society. Drug addicts need sympathy and understanding, not insults and condemnation. There are a lot of reports in the television and newspapers about the ill-effects of drug abuse and drug consumption. Much of what is heard about drugs actually comes mostly from those selling and consuming them. Those who have been cured and reformed have testified that they would have done anything to buy drugs for which we have to be cautious. Interestingly, the word “drug” probably comes from the Persian word “drogues” which means the herbal medicines prepared by ancient Persians to heal the sick.

The world recognises the significance of this issue and as such observes International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking every year on June 26. On such an auspicious occasion, programmes are held which consist of seminars, symposia and discussions to create awareness in the society. It is worthwhile to adopt similar measures in the state by conducting such programmes not only at the state capital but also at the district and the block levels which will involve the government, the civil societies, the educational institutions, the church organisations and the village durbars. Discussions will not suffice unless actions are accordingly taken by one and all.
