Suspended Congress legislator from East Shillong, Ampareen Lyngdoh, will be joining the National People’s Party (NPP) on December 19 during a ceremony that will be held at Madan Ïewrynghep at 3 pm.
The campaign office of the suspended Congress MLA has been calling up people inviting them to be part of the programme on Monday.
However, she is yet to resign as a member of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
On December 18 evening, NPP flags were put up at Laitumkhrah, Lachaumiere, Keating Road and other parts of the constituency.
It may be mentioned that last week The Meghalayan had reported that the suspended Congress legislator will be joining the NPP on December 19.
On that occasion when asked if the report was true she cheekily replied, “Will let you know.”
The BJP had also tried to convince Lyngdoh to join the saffron party but she refused.
Lyngdoh along with four other MLAs – Kimfa S Marbaniang (Rambrai-Jyrngam), Mayralborn Syiem (Nongpoh), Mohendro Rapsang (West Shillong) and PT Sawkmie (Mawlai) – were suspended for three and half years by the Congress after they extended support to the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government with the BJP as one of the constituents.
Kimfa and Mohendro are expected to join the NPP.
Meanwhile Syiem and Sawkmie will be joining the UDP ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections in the state.
It may be mentioned that in 2008 she first won on a United Democratic Party (UDP) ticket from the erstwhile Laitumkhrah assembly seat but resigned a year later to contest from the Congress.
In 2013 she defeated UDP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Bindo M Lanong from the East Shillong constituency.
In 2018 too she won on a Congress ticket before being suspended earlier this year.
