Assam: 8 arrested Al-Qaeda, AQIS linked persons sent to 9-day judicial custody

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while coming down heavily on the "Jihadi modules" in the state, said that a lot of information is expected from these arrests.

GUWAHATI:

The Barpeta court, on July 29, sent eight arrested persons with links to Al-Qaeda in Indian Sub-continent (AQIS) and Bangladesh-based Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) in Assam, to nine days police custody.

“The eight arrested persons having links with AQIS/ABT were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate court in Barpeta, Assam, on July 29. The court has sent them to nine days police custody,” said Amitava Sinha, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Barpeta.

In a major crackdown in the Northeastern state of Assam, 11 persons were detained on July 28 for their alleged links with global terror outfits including Al-Qaeda in Indian Sub-continent (AQIS) and Bangladesh-based Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT). It was informed that one of the detained persons was a Madrassa teacher in the state.

According to the police, the 11 persons, who were detained from Assam’s Morigaon, Barpeta, Guwahati, and Goalpara districts, are “connected to Islamic fundamentalism” having links with AQIS and ABT. Further action will be taken as per the law.
