Assam floods: Death toll rises to 126, 22.21 lakh still reeling under water

GUWAHATI:

Assam reported five more deaths due to floods on June 26, taking the death toll to 126, and about 22.21 lakh still reeling under flood waters.

The fresh deaths were reported from Barpeta, Cachar, Darrang Karimganj and Morigaon districts, an official bulletin of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.

The ASDMA said that 22,21,577 of 2,542 villages under 75 revenue circles have been affected by the floods.

Barpeta is the worst affected district with 6,95,617 of 567 villages under Barpeta, Barnagar, Kalgachia, Baghbar, Sarthebari and Chenga revenue circles have been affected, followed by Nagaon district where 5,12,778 people from 314 villages under Raha, Nagaon and Kampur revenue circles have been affected.

In Cachar district, 2,77,158 people of 451 villages under Silchar, Sonai, Katigorah, Udharbond and Lakhipur revenue circles have been affected by the floods.

In Hailakandi districts, 42,973 people of 8 villages under Hailakandi, Lala and Algapur revenue circles have been affected by the deluge.

Meanwhile, 564 relief camps and 116 relief distribution centres have set up for the people affected by floods, and at present, 2,17,413 people are taking shelter at the relief camps.

According to CWC (Central Water Commission) bulletin, Kopili is flowing above the danger level (at Dharamtul (Nagaon). Barak at BP Ghat (Karimganj) and at AP Ghat, (Cachar) and Kushiyara is flowing above the danger level at Karimganj.

NDRF and others are helping the district administration in the safe evacuation of people from affected areas, and far 67,237 people have been safely evacuated by the rescue forces.
