GUWAHATI:
Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi said that Northeast has the potential to triple its food production and usher in green revolution through organic mode of production.
Mukhi said so while attending the 22ndĀ convocation of theĀ Assam Agricultural University as the chief guest, on March 3.
Addressing the gathering, Mukhi urged the university to be a front-runner in imparting education in agricultural and allied fields to help address emergingĀ and upcoming challenges confronting the agriculture sector.
āThe success of education lies with the fact that its fruits remain attached with the root of the society so that they can guide it to righteousness. The progress of any society in terms of economic up-gradation, educational enlightenment, and better lifestyle should not mean that we get detached ourselves from our roots,ā Mukhi said.
The governor in his address urged the youths to not just rely on the service sector for employment but also the agricultural sector.
āOne needs service sector, but what would happen if adequate production of food grain does not happen. If we donāt produce enough to feed, what will happen to us? Therefore, it is our prime duty to transform the agriculture sector into a highly attractive one,ā he said.
Stating that the countryās agriculture sector has been contributing very significantly to the process of nation-building, he highlighted the steps taken by the Centre to support farmers.
The Convocation was also attended by agriculture minister Atul Bora, MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, MP Topon Kumar Gogoi, vice-chancellor Assam Womenās University Prof Ajanta Borgohain Rajkonwar, vice-chancellor of Assam Agricultural University Dr Bidyut C Deka, Padma Shri Dr Kushal Konwar Sarma, deans, heads of departments and centres, and faculty members, among others.
