Guwahati, Feb 23: The Congress is facing an uphill task in selecting a candidate for the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam with three strong contenders vying for it.
Apart from the incumbent Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, two strong Congress leaders Gaurav Gogoi and Rakibul Husain seeking to contest from Nagaon seat.
In a viral video, former minister Rakibul Hussain has been put up as a villain at Nagaon Congress headquarters. Gaurav Gogoi and Rakibul Hussain are seen in the poster and Rakibul Hussain is accused of ending Gaurav Gogoi politically.
Sources said internal dispute has been going on in Assam Congress and the leaders are seeking ticket from the muslim majority Nagaon Lok Sabha seat.
“Gaurav Gogoi is a incumbent MP from Kaliabor but after delimitation the seat was dissolved. Gaurav Gogoi who is a son of former Congress chief minister Tarun Gogoi don’t want to contest from other seat because BJP have a strong hold in all the seats. The Nagaon seat will be a preferable one for him because of muslim majority,” said a polytical analyst.
The internal rift between the top Congress leaders in Assam has now become a cause of concern for the party ahead of the parliamentary elections.
Assam Congress has not yet decided the candidate for the Nagaon seat. APCC chief Bhupen Borah said that Congress will contest in 12 Lok Sabha seats in Assam.
