Assam records 12,726 rape cases from 2016 to Feb 2023

In Guwahati, a total of 8,700 women-related crimes, 3,153 cases of women-related kidnapping, 519 murders, 26,742 theft, 53 dacoity, 3,366 loot, 2,527 suicides were reported in the city during the past seven years.

A total of 12,726 incidents of rape were reported in Assam from 2016 to February 28, 2023, the state assembly was informed on March 13, with 452 cases reported from Guwahati city.

“1,70,174 cases of crime against women were reported during this period,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is also holding the charge of the home department, informed the House in a written answer from AGP MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita.

From among them, 39,075 were women-related kidnappings, 8358 murders, 1,03,296 theft, 1158 dacoity, 9578 loot and 18,764 suicides.

However, the official figure tabled in the assembly claimed that the crime graph is going down from 2016 to 2022.

The number of incidents of crime against women has gone down from 46,043 in 2016 to 31,436 in 2022. In January and February of this year, the total number of cases registered relating to crime against women was 3,468.

The number of murders has gone down from 1,149 in 2016 to 155 in 1,0222 in 2022, suicide cases from 3,023 to 2,000, women-related crimes from 20,869 to 12,044, women-related kidnapping from 5,339 to 3,302, theft cases 14,120 to 11,100, dacoity from 156 to 82, rape cases from 1,723 to 1,178 and loot cases have gone down from 939 in 2016 to 702 cases in 2022.

From 2016 to 2023 (February), state police have filed a total of 3,87,165 chargesheets in various courts.

Of them, 1,47,669 got acquittal by the court. The rate of conviction is 8.5 per cent and the rate of acquittal is 91.50 per cent.

“In a bid to prevent crimes in the city and different parts of the state, the state police has maintained 24X7 patrolling in the city and other areas,” the Chief Minister said.

“Village Defence organizations in the rural areas and the citizen committees have been strengthened and awareness drives against crimes have also been initiated,” he added.
