Assam trader murdered in Garo Hills, 3 nabbed

A broomstick trader from Assam who had come to Garo Hills to purchase the commodity has been murdered in Damal Asim area of West Garo Hills by three men after he refused to pay extortion money demanded by them.

All three killers have been arrested and the body recovered from a forested area.

The victim, Asad Ali of Fakirganj, Dhubri district of Assam disappeared from Jangrapara
area under Dadenggre civil sub division on February 11 prompting the family to alert
police.

West Garo Hills police launched an investigation and identified the main culprits, hailing
from Damal Asim area itself, who were taken into custody on Wednesday.

The three killers, identified as Nikseng R Marak of Tebonggre under Damal Asim police
station, Nobel M Sangma  also from Tebonggre (Damal Asim) and Altu M Sangma of
Dabigre under Dadenggre police station jurisdiction confessed to police during
interrogation about the crime they committed.

They revealed that the trader came to Dabigre village on February 11 to purchase the
broomstick to export to Assam.

After waylaying him on the road they demanded a sum of Rs  50,000 from him as
extortion money.

When Ali refused to pay, the criminals killed him in cold blood by bludgeoning him and
later dumped his body in a forested area near Baljek Aduma (Adim-dim) Village of
Damal Asim.

The murderers led a police team to the place leading to the recovery of the body.

“The investigation is almost complete and we will be chargesheeting the case soon,”
said West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police V S Rathore while speaking to The
Meghalayan on Thursday evening.

The body of the victim has been sent to Tura Civil Hospital for post mortem examination
and a case (No. 01(02)22) has been registered at Dadenggre police station under
sections 120B/364/302 IPC, informed police.
