Assam vehicles contribute to traffic in Shillong; Govt to work on new routes

“If we stop them from plying to the state, and then they do the same, then we will be in trouble,” he said.

SHILLONG:

Reacting to queries of Assam vehicles commuting in the city and contributing to the traffic menace, Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, on Friday stated said that he has directed the officers of the concerned department to engage in dialogue with their Assam counterparts and have them onboard so that the Meghalaya vehicles also do not face problem while commuting to Assam.

“If we stop them from plying to the state, and then they do the same, then we will be in trouble,” he said.

Lyngdoh also mentioned that they are figuring out new routes in which these Assam vehicles can ply directly to locations like Sohra without entering the city and contributing to the traffic situation.

“The Umiam- Mawlyndep route is one such road that is under construction,” he added.

He also discussed how the newly launched vehicles exclusively meant for ferrying tourists will help in the number of Assam cars going down.

The department recently launched fifty new tourism vehicles and aims to launch fifty more by next March.
