Benefits of Exercise

By the editor

Under the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East (PM-DevINE), generous funds have been allocated and will be implemented through the North Eastern Council (NEC). The added benefit is that the scheme is independent of the existing central or state schemes, youth and women will be prioritised for uplift and their well-being. Hopefully,
sports and youth affairs will receive an impetus, which has all along contributed much to the development and progress. During the last two decades or so, Meghalaya has witnessed an upsurge in the sector. Youths, regardless of gender, were not happy to participate only in the various tournaments held within the state or the region but they accepted the challenges of venturing outside at the national level. Within a short time, their talent and skills were recognised and soon they were enrolled in prestigious teams and clubs. The government’s role cannot be underestimated because at the initial stage, incentives were quite encouraging. Recognition and awards, in kind or in cash, boosted the morale of the competitors. Private enterprises have also contributed much since the earlier years and continue to do so, thus projecting the talents and capabilities of our youth in various fields of sports and games. The slogan ‘Catch them Young’ was soon translated into action. Free-hand exercises, yoga, going to gyms to keep fit and trim are becoming a regular practice not only among the youths but even among the elderly and senior citizens.

The Greeks had vast outdoor playgrounds and gymnasiums where young boys were intensively trained in order to attain proper physical condition in all respects, mentally as well as morally. To the Greeks, they were considered as warriors who would protect the country and its people. Games and sports were so highly esteemed that during the Olympics, held once every four years, all hostilities were temporarily suspended during that period. The Romans, who succeeded the Greeks, did not hesitate to emulate them. Given proper amenities, our young boys and girls will not lag behind but they will also excel. In the 1948 Olympics, Dr T Ao, a medical doctor by profession belonging to the Ao community from Nagaland, was the captain of the Indian Football contingent. In 1978, the young students of St Anthony’s High School, Shillong won the Subroto Cup held in New Delhi. Besides, there are many others also. These notable achievements will no doubt inspire the present generation who will surely accept the challenges with courage and determination. To rise to the top, regular practice is essential which will greatly benefit them in also maintaining their health. Games and sports are not confined only to football or soccer but also to other types , whether indoor or outdoor. Over and above, qualified coaches are much needed. Winning is the main target, but exercises are really beneficial.
