When early humans started counting they used their hands and fingers to arrive at the result. Then they began to devise ways and means to facilitate their calculation. In course of time, hands and fingers gave way to machines which were improved at different intervals for better and quicker solution. One of the earliest inventions was the ABACUS which is still used in many countries. Gradually, science and technology revolutionised the world and proved to be much beneficial to people. Computer is the latest scientific tool which has become a great boon to humans, not only in case of calculations but in many respects especially information and knowledge with the help of computers, calculations can be done within a few seconds compared to a human brain which will take minutes and hours, thus saving time and energy. Records and files of employees can be safely stored in computers which can be recalled at any time for use and reference. They print the bills to be sent to customers and customers can easily resort to computers for payment. Booking and reservation of tickets for journey by public transport, railways or flight can be done within seconds.
Digital computers work with numbers and numbers representing alphabetical characters. The bigger and sophisticated the computers, the costlier they are and the better they perform. Due to improved technology, they are becoming cheaper and function better. The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the part of the computer that does actual work of computing. It is made up of electric circuits. A big computer may have hundreds of thousands of circuits. Even complicated mathematical problems involving reasoning do not take much time. Mistakes and errors will be pointed out on the computer for correction. These wonderful and useful machines are used for weather forecast. In brief, the benefits from science and technology are countless. So popular are the handy computers nowadays like the laptops of various sizes and shapes and that too at affordable costs that computers have become unavoidable among different sections of the people, from children and young kids to senior citizens. During Covid pandemic, education was imparted to students through on-line classes. Next development is Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technology has created history in the world.
Use of technology has reduced much paperwork and at the same time saved time and energy. During the crisis because of corona disease, people have resorted to on-line alternative for their various needs at home. Due to restrictions of movement outdoors, many employees of government as well as of companies perform their duties from home. We cannot afford to be complacent and so remain stagnant in life. The Government of India is encouraging the promotion of science and technology and the country needs many qualified, talented scientists who will be able to project our country on the map of the advanced nations of the world. Hence, engineering colleges and technical institutions along with government patronage  should be ready to extend help and assistance to the young and aspiring youths whose dream should be beyond the horizon.
