The Tripura unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on July 28 held a protest rally demanding the resignation of Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury for his ‘objectionable’ comments on newly elected President Draupadi Murmu.
“It is very unfortunate that a senior leader like Chowdhury made such a disrespectful comment on a woman who took charge of the country’s highest office. By doing so, the Congress has proved that they are anti-tribal, anti-woman and anti-people. It proves that the Congress never respected women and it also reveals the real face of the Grand Old Party which ruled the country for a long time,” former chief minister and MLA Biplab Kumar Deb said.
Stating that Chowdhury should apologize for his remark, Deb demanded the Congress high command expel Chowdhury from the Lok Sabha as well as from the party.
“Such comments will not be tolerated. Chowdhury should apologise publicly. We are demanding that the Congress top brass expel him from Lok Sabha as well as from the party immediately to make the party’s stand clear,” Deb added.
He further said that insulting the President of India is a direct insult to the whole country and its people.
As a mark of protest, the BJP workers and supporters also burnt effigies of Chowdhury.
