Mawrie also added that the party wants both Khasi and Garo languages to be recognised in the Eighth Schedule at one go since both are from the same state.

SHILLONG:

State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Ernest Mawrie on September 27 said that the party will take up the issue of recognition of Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution.

Asked if the state BJP will nudge the Centre to give recognition to the Khasi language before the 2023 assembly elections, Mawrie said that the party cannot say when the Centre will give recognition but it has written to the central leadership of the party to take up the matter so that recognition is given at the earliest.

The state BJP president also said that once the Khasi language is given recognition it will benefit the people who speak the language in many ways.

Mawrie also added that the party wants both Khasi and Garo languages to be recognised in the Eighth Schedule at one go since both are from the same state.

It may be mentioned that on November 27, 2018 the Meghalaya Assembly unanimously passed a resolution to urge the Centre to give recognition to both Khasi and Garo in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution.
