BJP wants inquiry into irregularities in ADCs

SHILLONG:

The state unit of the BJP on Wednesday said that it will pursue the probe into the alleged corruption in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) to its logical conclusion.

“If the Directorate of Local Fund Audit cannot probe into the alleged corruption in the ADCs then it should be handed over to the CBI,” BJP state president Ernest Mawrie said.

It may be mentioned that the Directorate of Local Fund Audit took up the probe in October 2020, of the central government funds the two ADCs are accused of misusing.

Among the complainants was Mawrie, the BJP state unit president who had demanded a CBI probe into “misappropriation” of Rs. 264 crore by the councils.

On Wednesday, the state unit president of the BJP said that last month he saw a news report that the Directorate of Local Fund Audit will send a report to the District Council Affairs department but it has not been done yet which is unfortunate.

“We are concerned because we have taken up the issue of corruption in ADCs and we have pressed for an inquiry,” Mawrie said.

The BJP state chief had alleged that the funds, allocated under the special assistance grant for the development of under-developed areas, were misappropriated in the name of “ghost” bridges and footpaths and to carry out repair works of official buildings, guest houses, beside others.
