Blow to Congress in Khasi Hills, 2 sitting MDCs join NPP

Shillong, Feb 19: The Congress has suffered a major political blow in the Khasi Hills region after two sitting MDCs in the KHADC switched parties to join the ruling NPP.

Sitting Congress MDCs Batskhmen Ryntathiang from Mairang and Carness Sohshang from Mawkyrwat constituency were welcomed into the National People’s Party on Monday by National President Conrad K. Sangma and State President Prestone Tynsong.

Another former MDC from Sohra, Donevan Kharwanlang was also inducted in the party.

Welcoming the trio into NPP, National President and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed optimism that their entry will strengthen the NPP family and the objective of the party.

Sangma said that the NPP has gained large-scale support across the state and this is being reflected with leaders and supporters joining the party in huge numbers. He exuded confidence that their party candidate Ampareen Lyngdoh would triumph from the Shillong seat in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

“We have received information from different parts of Khasi -Jaintia Hills that our candidate is doing well. There is a major task ahead and unitedly we have to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha election”, he added.

Sangma also told the gathering that the NPP Government is working tirelessly to accelerate growth and development in the State. He informed that NPP has chart out a road map for Meghalaya’s growth and has been working in a systematic manner to achieve its goals.

“The visible change and development of the State is being witnessed by the people of our State. I am sure that people will repose their faith in the party in the upcoming election”, he said.

Tynsong said that NPP as a party is upbeat for the upcoming election and support from the leaders will play an important role in connecting with the grassroot.

National Vice President Snaiwbhalang Dhar, Lok Sabha candidate Ampareen Lyngdoh and host of senior party leaders including A.T. Mondal. Rakkam Sangma and others were present in the induction ceremony which was held at Party Office in Shillong.
