The Congress in Williamnagar constituency is looking at a washout of their main rival following desertion of three saffron leaders with their supporters to the grand old party to support Deborah C Marak.
On January 7, three leaders of the BJP, including their last candidate for the GHADC elections, merged their supporters with the Congress to extend support to Deborah.
“The leaders who came into the congress fold with their supporters have been disillusioned with the BJP and its agenda and believe only the congress can lift the state and take it forward,” says Deborah.
The last MDC candidate of the BJP from Simsanggre (Williamnagar) Greatwell R Sangma joined the Congress party together with the joint secretary of the BJP Mandal Gerald Marak and youth secretary Denybirth Momin in the presence of congress leader and former MLA Deborah C Marak.
“These leaders from the BJP along with their supporters do not want the BJP to contest from Williamnagar and have reposed their faith in the Congress which encouraged them to cross over,” says Deborah Marak.
The Congress veteran, who has won Williamnagar multiple times says the fight will squarely be with the NPP in the upcoming elections and believes there is a strong anti-incumbency factor prevailing against sitting NPP legislator Marcuise Marak.
“People are aware of the kind of positive governance Congress gave them during our tenure. That has not been the same with the current NPP government and they (people) want to change that,” added Deborah.
She cites the example of Independent candidate Lucky Momin who has withdrawn from the election race in Williamnagar and joined the Congress to support and campaign for her.
