Border area residents unhappy with MoU

Nongstoin:

People living in border areas have expressed discontent over the recent MoU signed between the chief ministers of Meghalaya and Assam to resolve the ongoing border problem between the two states, and have urged that the disputed areas be revisited.

According to sources, a public meeting in this regard was held on Monday at Mallangkona Seminaguri playground and took a decision to approach the chief minister to revisit the disputed areas.

The meeting was also attended by Mendipathar MLA, M J Sangma, MDC Williamnagar, A R Marak, MDC Rongrong , R K Sangma, F D Shira, MDC Damas, C W Momin MDC Kharkhutta, leaders and members of GSU and AHAM, P Nianglang Sirdar of Nonglang Sirdarship among others.

The residents in the border areas strongly opposed the survey done in 2011 and demanded proper enquiry into the matter.

They also shouted slogans in which they demanded that the chief minister as well as the local MLA and MDC should revisit the place and take opinions of the residents of the area.

Meghalaya and Assam will soon start discussions on the remaining six of the 12 areas of difference between them without waiting for Parliament to give its approval to the Memorandum of Understanding signed on March 29 on six areas.
