Border group alleges threat to Khasi-Pnar residents

SHILLONG:

The Hynñiewtrep Border Dispute Redressal Forum has alleged that the Karbi community has threatened to drive out the Khasi-Pnar residents of Elaka Labang Nongphyllut Pangam Raliang as they did not participate in the Karbi Anglong Autonomous District Council election held on June 8.

The chairman of the forum, Chandame Sungoh, said that the Khasi-Pnar residents decided to boycott the election as they were aghast at the lack of development and said, “There are no schools, no power supply, no road connectivity, no hospitals… there is nothing.”

He said that chaos has often erupted in the villages prompting the Khasi-Pnar community to leave the place in 1971-72, 2003 and 2015 and alleged that the Karbis would harass the people time and again.

“As of now, the Khasi Pnar community is living in fear,” he said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party won all the 26 seats in the Karbi Anglong Autonomous District Council.
