BSF jawan killed in alleged ambush by banned NLFT outfit in Tripura

A source informed that when the BSF jawans intensified their firing, the extremists fled the spot and ran towards a thick forest on the Bangladesh side.

AGARTALA:

A 53-year-old jawan of Border Security Force (BSF) lost his life after suspected extremists of the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) outfit opened fire at a group of patrolling border guards on August 19.

Speaking with The Meghalayan, an intelligence sleuth said that the incident had taken place around 8:30 am in the Simnapur border outpost which falls under the Anandabazar Police Station of North Tripura district.

“Like every other day, the BSF jawans were patrolling the border areas close to the Simnapur border outpost. All of a sudden, NLFT extremists, who were sitting in ambush on the other side of the barbed-wire fencing, started opening fire indiscriminately on the BSF jawans. The BSF jawans also retaliated, but unfortunately in the exchange of fire, one BSF jawan identified as Grijesh Kumar, who was a head constable of 145 battalion, sustained four bullet injuries,” the sleuth said.

“We airlifted the injured jawan to Agartala for treatment, however, he succumbed to his injuries. We have sent the body to GB Pant hospital in Agartala for post-mortem,” he added.

He further informed that when BSF jawans intensified their firing, the extremists fled the spot and ran towards a thick forest on the Bangladesh side.

Soon after the incident, senior police and BSF officials rushed to the spot, which falls in close proximity to the Tripura-Mizoram border.
