Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee inaugurates Jowai District and Session Court building

"We have splendid court facilities across the state. This building stands as a symbol of justice and the importance of accessible courts in ensuring justice in our society," stated Chief Justice Sanjeev Banerjee.

Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, Sanjib Banerjee, on October 19, inaugurated the newly constructed Jowai District and Session Court building in Khliehtyrshi village, West Jaintia Hills.

Established on July 27, 2013, following the separation of the Judiciary from the Executive branch, the District and Session Court represents a significant milestone in the state’s legal landscape.

At the inaugural event, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, alongside Justice HS Thangkhiew (Judge of the Meghalaya High Court), Justice W Diengdoh (Judge of the Meghalaya High Court), and Justice B Bhattacharjee (Additional Judge of the Meghalaya High Court) graced the occasion.

Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar proudly emphasised that this complex marks the ninth Court Complex in the state, serving all 12 Districts. He lauded the exquisite craftsmanship of these court complexes, while Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee expressed, “We have beautiful court complexes in the state. This building stands for your rights and if the court doors are closed, there will be no justice in the society.”

District and Session Judge of West Jaintia Hills, NA Khan, revealed that the permanent court complex covers an expansive 11.162 acres and came with a substantial budget of Rs 35,89,82,000.00 (thirty-five crores eighty-nine lakh, eighty-two thousand only) for its construction. The complex offers a generous total floor area of 93,631 square meters (or 93,631 Lt, B698,604 meters) and is equipped with a total of 7 courtrooms. Notably, the District currently bears a caseload of 978 cases, including 718 criminal cases and 260 civil cases.

The event was attended by a host of dignitaries, including the first District and Session Judge, B Giri, who currently chairs the State Human Rights Commission. Other notable attendees included the Registrar General of the Meghalaya High Court, the Dolloi of Jowai Elaka, Puramon Kynjiñ, local MLA Wailadmiki Shylla, District and Session Judge of East Jaintia Hills C Dkhar, and MDCs from JHADC.

Moreover, the event saw the participation of students, department heads, judicial officials, officers, Superintendent of Police Chemphang Syrti, Deputy Commissioners, lawyers, advocates, and many others.
