A huge cache of Claymore mines used for preparing Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) that were left abandoned inside a forest in Dambuk reguon of South Garo Hills were unearthed on December 14.
A total of 11 Claymore mine cases were unearthed from a jungle hideout by the police based on intelligence reports of its presence.
The cases are used by insurgents and terror groups to prepare Improvised Explosive Devices that cause extensive damage to vehicles and humans.
It is a favorite of militant groups to use for targetting security forces since it can be detonated even remotely.
The banned GNLA outfit was infamous for having a sizeable arsenal of these explosives which were used with devastating effect on security forces.
Its former chief Sohan D Shira had concealed dozens of such mines and other explosives all across the rebel stronghold of Durama hills in East Garo Hills as well the Rongara Dambuk area of South Garo Hills.
The Maoist rebel groups in central India, ULFA in Assam and other north east groups are also known for its use.
